Definition
Net 90 is a payment term meaning the full invoice amount is due 90 calendar days after the invoice date. It is one of the longest standard terms and is usually set by large enterprises, retailers, and some government buyers. For small suppliers, Net 90 creates a three-month gap between doing the work and getting paid.
Net 90 in practice
Large buyers use long terms to keep cash in their own business, effectively borrowing from their suppliers. Some offer supply chain finance programs that let suppliers get paid early for a fee.
Before accepting Net 90, work out whether your cash flow can absorb the wait. Options include pricing the delay into your rate, requesting a deposit or milestone payments, offering an early payment discount, or using invoice factoring.
Check local rules. Some jurisdictions limit how long large companies can take to pay small suppliers, or allow statutory interest after a set period.
Example
A small manufacturer invoices a national retailer $40,000 on January 15 with Net 90 terms. The money is not due until April 15, so the manufacturer must fund three months of payroll and materials in the meantime.
