Amounts and totals

Total due

Definition

The total due is the final amount the client must pay on an invoice after all line items, discounts, taxes, and prior payments are accounted for. It should be the most prominent number on the invoice, shown with the currency and placed next to the due date so there is no doubt about what to pay and when.

Also called: Invoice total, Amount due, Grand total

Total due in practice

If a deposit or partial payment has been received, show the invoice total, then the amount paid, then the balance due. Clients should never have to subtract previous payments themselves.
