Definition
The balance due is the amount still owed on an invoice after subtracting any payments, deposits, or credits already applied. On a fresh invoice it equals the total due. On a final invoice after a deposit, or after a partial payment, it is the remaining amount the client needs to pay.
Also called: Outstanding balance, Remaining balance
Balance due in practice
Show the balance due clearly on any invoice where prior payments exist, along with the dates and references of those payments. This prevents double payment and makes reconciliation simple on both sides.
