Installment payment

Definition

An installment payment is one of a series of scheduled payments that together settle a single invoice or purchase. Instead of paying the full amount by one due date, the client pays fixed portions on agreed dates. Installment plans make larger purchases affordable and help recover overdue balances without escalating to collections.

Installment payment in practice

Put the schedule in writing: the total, the number of installments, each amount and due date, and what happens if a payment is missed. Some businesses charge a small fee or interest for spreading payments; check local consumer credit rules before doing so.

On the invoice, show the full amount, then list the schedule or reference the payment plan agreement. After each payment, send a receipt or updated statement showing the remaining balance due.

Installment payments differ from milestone payments. Milestones are tied to stages of work being completed; installments are tied to calendar dates regardless of progress.

Example

A dental lab agrees to let a clinic pay a $6,000 overdue invoice in four monthly installments of $1,500 on the first of each month, with the full balance due immediately if one is missed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I offer a payment plan to a late-paying client?

Often yes. A realistic plan the client can keep usually recovers more money, and more quickly, than collections. Get the plan signed and stop work on new orders until it is complete.

Do I issue a new invoice for each installment?

Either approach works. You can issue one invoice and track partial payments against it, or issue a separate invoice for each installment if the client's accounts team prefers.
