Net amount

Definition

The net amount is the value left after deductions, or the price before tax, depending on context. On a VAT or GST invoice, the net amount is the price excluding tax. On a contractor or payroll statement, it is what remains after retention, withholding, or fees are subtracted from the gross amount.

Net amount in practice

On tax invoices in VAT and GST countries, each line often shows a net amount, the tax rate, and the tax amount. The net figures are what the seller keeps as revenue; the tax is collected on behalf of the government.

In payment processing, "net" means what you receive after fees. A $1,000 card payment with a 3 percent fee settles as a net amount of $970, which matters when you reconcile payments against invoices.

Do not confuse "net amount" with "Net 30" and similar payment terms. In payment terms, "net" means the full invoice amount, with no discount taken.

Example

A UK consultant invoices a net amount of 2,000 pounds plus 20 percent VAT of 400 pounds, for a gross amount of 2,400 pounds.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is net amount before or after tax?

On sales invoices it usually means before tax. Net plus tax equals the gross amount. In payroll and settlements it means after deductions, so check the context.

Why does "Net 30" use the word net?

In payment terms, "net" means the whole invoice amount with no early payment discount deducted. Net 30 means the full amount is due in 30 days.
