Definition
An IBAN (International Bank Account Number) is a standardized account identifier of up to 34 characters, starting with a two-letter country code, used for cross-border bank transfers in Europe and many other regions. Including your IBAN on invoices to international clients lets them pay by bank transfer without errors.
Also called: International Bank Account Number
IBAN in practice
Pair the IBAN with your bank's SWIFT/BIC code and your account name exactly as the bank holds it. US accounts do not have IBANs; US-based sellers provide routing and account numbers instead.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need an IBAN to receive international payments?
If your bank is in a country that uses IBANs, yes, it is the standard identifier. Outside the IBAN system, provide the account number and SWIFT code your bank specifies.
